Barred owls are among the most common birds of prey in southwest Ohio. Thanks to my friends Tim & Jen for sharing their resident neighbor.

Barred owls prefer mature oak forest. But they don't roost very far off the ground, which makes them relatively easy to find compared to other owls.
A winter owl traps air in its fluffy feathers to stay warm while it stakes out a birdfeeder at Sax Zim Bog in Minnesota where it was -32 degrees.
I never snuck up on a sleeping owl before, but this one lives in a loud world of traffic and constant distractions and let me get within relatively close view of of my 600 millimeter lens.
