Ode to Penguins


 An Adelie penguin climbs to the edge of a rocky mount in Antarctica just to admire the view in a snowstorm. I was struck by how alike they are to us — these social animals that are devoted to family and depend on their community while being clumsy and fallible and totally charming.

Adelie penguins slide down an ice field to get to a glacial pond where they can clean themselves and socialize.


A king penguin radiates warm colors in the sunshine in the Malvinas.



King penguins gather in large groups in front of a glacier on South Georgia Island.



King penguins have intense colors in the often bleak landscape.



A Magellanic penguin relaxes next to a flower bush in the Malvinas. 



Magellanic penguins return to the Malvinas from a fishing trip. The water was a beautiful turquoise.



A gentoo penguin sticks close to its mom or dad on South Georgia. Look at those feet!



A rockhopper penguin stretches in the Malvinas where it is watching over its young chick.



A Macaroni penguin cautiously looks before she leaps. I told her the coast was clear just as a fur seal came up through the bull kelp to bully the little penguin. 



A chinstrap penguin abides a snowstorm in Antarctica.



Adelie penguins feed hungry chicks in Antarctica. They all look pretty healthy.
