Happy Groundhog Day!

 

Happy Groundhog Day! Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow, portending six more weeks of winter and surprising nobody in the frozen north.

This backyard visitor woke up in November and needed a little more insulation for its burrow under the shed.




A groundhog at Sharon Woods let me get a quick portrait while it was foraging. How much wood can a woodchuck chuck? They prefer carrots.



Groundhogs are always welcome in the yard. They seem to like the clover and the absence of dogs.



True to the holiday, groundhogs are very common in Pennsylvania where I would see them around ballfields when I lived there. But this is an Ohio groundhog.
