Antarctic Landscapes

My adventuresome friend Doug invited me on a trip to Antarctica a couple years ago and after 18 months of waiting, we finally disembarked Ushuaia for the snowy continent in December. While I was most excited about the wildlife, I marveled at the scenery as well. Antarctica will make a landscape photographer of anyone.

The Antarctic peninsula features rocky mountains that stretch all the way to the sea.




Stromness Landing was an amazing introduction to South Georgia, home to a colony of king penguins.




A tabular iceberg dominates the Southern Ocean off Antarctica. 




I found the real castle from Disney Nature in the South Orkney Islands.




St. Andrews Bay on South Georgia was simply glorious. I expected monochrome blacks and grays, but was not prepared for the vivid colors. After spending the day hiking in a verdant valley and photographing king penguins and baby fur seals, we had a Christmas Eve cookout on the helipad of the Ortelius surrounded by stunning green mountains.



The sun peeks through heavy fog to kiss the Antarctic coastline.




A stormy sky frames an iceberg carved by the wind and waves off Antartica's Paulet Island.




A distant cruise ship navigates the icy waters of Antarctica.
